What does it mean to be a creative polymath? Simply put, it means that throughout my life I’ve explored or worked in a lot of different creative mediums—except dance, which I typically reserve for nights out.
Being a polymath has its rewards and challenges. The reward? You can do so many things. The challenge? You can do so many things!
Yet with careful attention to detail and prioritization, polymaths can be highly effective. The more polymaths engage in their varied interests, the richer their experience and breadth of work becomes. I liken it to operating a sound board. Sure, you could just crank up one channel but then the sound would be flat, lacking depth and ambiance. Or, you could adjust multiple channels, inching one up and then another to eventually achieve a full rich sound.
My creative pursuits have led me to:
- Spend two decades as writer and editor with notable roles as Managing Editor at Eight Custom Publishing in Hong Kong, Executive Editor at Washington Life magazine, and Editor-in-Chief of Capitol File Magazine. I was also a member of The White House Correspondents' Association.
- Moonlighted as an actor in Hong Kong film, TV, and theater, worked with Jackie Chan, and co-starred in the Asia debut of David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross."
- Lived and worked in Japan for nearly four years as a business consultant and communications specialist for Mazda Motor Company.
- I speak conversational Japanese, intermediate Spanish, and basic Bahasa and Cantonese.
- Showcased my hyper-realistic outsider art in solo and group shows in Hong Kong, Washington DC, and Los Angeles, and acted in Hollywood with appearances in shows like The West Wing, The OC, and CSI.
- Produced a documentary on the Crop Over festival in Barbados, now part of the Smithsonian Human Studies Archive.
- Found Genki Media LLC, a creative incubator and consultancy, and later establish and spin off ArtJamz, a creative arts experiential retail arts business.
- Scaled ArtJamz from a roving pop-up art party to a retail chain and, during COVID, into an international virtual art instruction and e-commerce business, which I successfully sold and exited in 2023.
- Worked as an associate producer and script doctor for the UTA-repped true crime podcast series, Deep Creek, focusing on the secretive 1950s CIA LSD project, MKUltra.
